Caitlin Clark gives sports commentating a try in hotel room
If Caitlin Clark wants to get into sports broadcasting, it would be a home run. The Indiana Fever rookie guard would have her pick of any TV network. Because she's a star on and off the court.
How do you know the Indiana Fever are in a good spot entering the postseason? I’m not sure the team chemistry has ever been better.
Take, for instance, a video shared by Fever guard Lexie Hull Friday on TikTok. She is in a hotel room with Caitlin Clark, who decides to share commentary for the baseball game on TV: Philadelphia Phillies vs New York Mets.
(Hull dates a former professional baseball player and the Fever players recently attended an Indy Indians game.)
Clark: “And that ball's hit to the shortstop. Rojas throws it over to first base and that's not going to be enough. That's an infield single by Contreras.”
The team had Friday off after a later arrival into Connecticut, their home for the next week as they begin the 2024 WNBA Playoffs on Sunday against the Sun.
There’s plenty of laughter during the 90-second video so they’re clearly having a good time. And they inevitably know that it will go viral.
More Clark: “We're in the bottom of the fourth, we've got a score of 1-0 to the Phillies. Runner on first, no outs. This brings someone to the plate. (laughs) And here comes the 0-1 pitch. And a little outside. I like it though. Nola's on the mound tonight. And his Skechers, red Skechers he's wearing.”
As a play-by-play announcer myself, I noticed how Clark got more comfortable with each video — and her energy elevated. That’s important.
“And that brings us to the top of the fifth with the Phillies leading 1-0. We'll be back in a minute. [laughter] With a 30-second break. Thanks for tuning in.”
And then this last sequence is just fantastic. First, Clark is wise to frequently share the inning and the score — the two most important things in baseball.
But then she says “We’ll be back in a minute … with a 30-second break.” And then thanks the audience.
At just 22 years old, Clark already has media training and reps. She answers questions from reporters for about a half hour on game day, before and after each game. For the first month of the season, she spoke at shootaround to so it climbed to almost 45 minutes per day.
This was her before Thursday’s regular-season finale in Washington DC: “I don't feel famous,” she said. “ Like, I don't feel like a celebrity. That's not the way I approach my life and I approach people in my life. I still go to the grocery story..."
The game was moved to Capital One Arena because of Clark and drew a sellout crowd of 20,711 — the largest regular-season crowd in WNBA history.
Clark apparently plans to stay in Indy for part of the offseason since her boyfriend, Connor, is now an assistant coach for Butler men’s basketball. She’ll have all kinds of offers to do different things, but you could easily see her on TV during the college basketball season — ESPN, Big Ten Network, FOX, NBC, etc.
Every single one would be interested.
In the comments of the TikTok video posted by Hull and reposted by Clark, Clark wrote “@Phillies hire me?”
MLB then shared the video on their Instagram and wrote “22,000 likes on this comment and we will get her in the booth.”
Let’s hope it happens.
