Caitlin Clark to miss more time — and Sabrina Ionescu has been there before

Clark continues to deal with a groin injury as the Fever return to action. Ionescu, now a WNBA veteran, is offering support after navigating her own injury setbacks early in her career.

Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark traveled with the team to New York, but will not play in Tuesday’s featured game against the Liberty on ESPN.

Yes, it’s just three days after All-Star break — and these two high-profile teams are meeting again, just as they did less than a week ago in the final game before All-Star “break.”

It wasn’t much of a break at all, especially for those in the host city. Fever head coach Stephanie White held practice late Sunday with most of the team; the three All-Stars were given the day off and encouraged to catch up on rest.

Clark was at practice on Monday, but did not participate. She suffered an injury to her right groin (the other side) less than one week ago against the Connecticut Sun. So now she’s out again — and in the process of getting additional medical advice from doctors across the country.

“I think that we're continuing to address everything that needs to be addressed,” White said after practice.

“We’re just going to continue to take it one day at a time and let her get her evaluations early this week. And then once we've done that, hopefully we'll have more of a clear line of what it looks like.”

For Clark, it’s been one thing after the next. You could see the emotions — and the build up — pour out of her last week playing in the TD Garden. She came up holding her right groin area after making a simple (for her) pass for a layup backdoor.

Simple things are not so simple for her right now.

She’s dealt with multiple injuries going back late April and the first week of training camp. That was almost three months ago.

On Saturday, before the All-Star game where she went from Captain Clark to Coach C, I asked her about the range of the emotions and what she’s feeling after sustaining yet another soft-tissue injury.

“I think when the injury happened it was pretty frustrating considering I knew what the coming days were going to hold for myself,” she said.
