Scott, thanks for a season of great coverage under goofy circumstances and I hope this venue was good for you as a business.
Surely the front don’t need the input from exit interviews to make this decision and get it done? I haven’t seen an NBA-level coach this bad with X’s and O’s since Isiah Thomas was coaching “The Quick.” Don’t even need to know details of the turmoil to understand that if New Nate is coming back the entire roster needs to be traded for unicorns or what ever square peg/ round hole metaphor you’d like to use because I don’t think there is a roster that could be constructed that could make those game plans successful if they have to go head-to-head with NBA-quality competition.
I guess the risk is just how bad is the PR to fire coaches in successive seasons? Probably still not as much risk as bringing them back to try again next season.
To me the choice is between a new coach and a massive roster overhaul. The team as currently constructed does not fit Bjorkgren's vision. We can blame injuries and COVID-19 all we want, but realistically how many games do you think a healthy roster would have won? I say 40, and going 40-32 would still mean at best the 6th seed. More likely 7th. Far from good.
I think it’s going to be a bit of both. The roster was really built two years ago to complement Vic upon his return and the unprecedented player continuity last offseason was just not going to pan out when Vic was traded and even worse, when we found out LeVert would be out. So the complementary players mostly proved that the team either lacks a centerpiece or more realistically, needs to be reimagined with the type of players that can keep the offense in motion around Sabonis and on defense first take away dribble penetration and then make the perimeter shots contested. Making matters worse, both Brogdon and LeVert showcased a ball-dominant game that minimizes ball movement and allows defense to be stationary. Was that undisciplined play or faulty game plan? We know a large chunk of blame belongs with the coach. We just don’t know how much the players share in with that. At the other end, force opponents to take long 2’s, don’t encourage them to come to the rim. I literally laughed out loud when TNT’s crew said Brogdon was a great defender. Maybe he is and I don’t remember because the schemes were so bad but he was a revolving door on D putting Turner in to foul trouble or prompting Turner to leave players unguarded at the rim in hopes that a blocked shot would result in a defensive rebound. So both a bad game plan and bad roster both need to be fixed.
