Lexie Hull raises IndyCar flag atop IMS Pagoda ahead of start to racing season
Fever guard Lexie Hull flew back to Indiana for a special honor at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. She was joined by IMS and IndyCar president Doug Boles to celebrate the start of the racing season.
SPEEDWAY — Lexie Hull has spent the last few months down in Miami, playing in the inaugural season of start-up 3x3 league Unrivaled. After a dominant 71-59 win Monday night by her Rose squad, the guard for the Indiana Fever returned to Indy on Tuesday for a special opportunity.
Hull, 25, was invited by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and president Doug Boles to be the celebrity to raise the IndyCar flag atop the famed Pagoda to mark the start of another IndyCar season.
It all begins on Sunday, March 2 at the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg presented by RP Funding on the streets of downtown St. Petersburg, Florida.
Raising of the flag became an annual tradition at the Speedway years ago. However, it used to be held at Gate 1. But now they leave those flags up all year around so they raise a different flag in a more prestigious location.
“It’s just a great way for us to say race season's beginning, spring's around the corner in Indianapolis, Indiana, and we just can't wait to get things going,” Boles said Tuesday afternoon atop the Pagoda rooftop. I was the only reporter on hand to cover the event.
