Pacers 2023 trade deadline primer: What I'm hearing in the final 24 hours
The NBA's trade deadline is 3 pm ET Thursday. Thus far, it's been quiet across the league. With Myles Turner's extension complete, will the Pacers get involved?
We are now less than 24 hours from the 2023 NBA trade deadline.
Just a few deals have already happened, Kyrie Irving being dealt to the Dallas being the most significant move. This is the week where the games become secondary to the transactions, which fans, at least online, seem to enjoy more.
The speculation, the debates, the what-if game… all thanks to the trade machine and round-the-clock news cycle.
“I always think about it and just think, ‘I’m glad I’m not a media person’ because what you guys go through trying to figure things out and figure out who’s gonna go where and what rumors are what, all that kind of stuff, that’s got to be maddening,” Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle said entering this week.
“This is, quite simply, a dynamic business and the possibility of being traded is a part of it. The human element is always there. There’s always gonna be some sensitivity. To just ignore it and just say, ‘Hey, it’s part of the business’ — it’s not that simple. As a coaching staff, our support staff and other guys in the locker room, we’ve got to help our guys get through this week. It’s a week that there’s tons and tons of speculation and in the end, there’s really very little movement in most cases.”
The Pacers have an opportunistic approach, according to team president Kevin Pritchard. They like what they’re establishing and building, but also recognize the product is incomplete. At least two Pacers have checked in with the front office about whether they might be traded.
“We’re finding more and more out about what we have,” Pritchard said last week. “Every day, we’re learning a little bit more. There’s ups and downs. I don’t want to say we’re gonna quick grow this thing because I don’t know. It may take another year or two. But, I’m surprised at what I’m saying today compared to what I thought I was going to be saying today five months ago.”
