First Look: WNBA takes over downtown Indy ahead of All-Star Weekend
With just a week to go until the WNBA All-Star Game, downtown Indianapolis is already decked out with banners, branding, and buzz.
In exactly one week, the best women’s basketball players will take center court at Gainbridge Fieldhouse for the annual WNBA All-Star Game.
That includes three Fever players: Caitlin Clark, Aliyah Boston, and Kelsey Mitchell.
When the league office reached out to team and city officials less than a year ago, as the scheduled host had a conflict, they jumped at the opportunity. After all, this city wants to be the women’s sports capital in America.
Just 17 months ago, the team and city went through it with NBA All-Star Weekend. And they crushed it — elevating the event to another level and setting a new standard.
Now they’ll do it again.
The skills challenge, 3-point contest, and more will be held on Friday, followed by the WNBA All-Star Game on Saturday, July 19, at 8:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
Over the last few weeks, special banners have gone up across downtown — massive signage for the weekend itself, as well as for partners like Nike, Gatorade, Coach, Delta, and more.
This week, I went on an evening walk through downtown to capture what it looks like. Many of you will attend, but many more are out of state — and even out of the country — so here’s a glimpse of how Indy goes all-in on big events.
