Pacers get their guy: Q&A with Bennedict Mathurin at the 2022 NBA Draft
The Pacers were enamored with Mathurin for several months. Then selected him 6th overall. "Tomorrow I’m going to wake up and be a Pacer."
BROOKYLN — Bennedict Mathurin arrived at his table in the green room almost an hour before the 2022 NBA Draft got underway. He was in the first row on one end, stage left.
He was joined by his mother, sister and agent. And his older brother was with him —in spirit, for everything he did and was a part of — throughout the big night.
Mathurin wore a perfectly tailored red and black three-piece suit. He had a black dress shirt underneath, and inside the suit was a photo of him with his sister, Jenn, and late brother, Dominique.
Around his neck, he wore an icy, blinged-out necklace designed by ZoFrost that read “DomixWorld.”
That’s in memory of his brother.
Almost eight years ago, when Mathurin was 12, Dominique was hit while riding his bicycle home from school. Now he’s the inspiration for everything Mathurin does.
He thinks about Dominique, who tragically lost his life on Sept. 30, 2014, often and carries his memory around with him every day — in the form of a tattoo on his forearm.
And during an interview later that night, he looked down and to his right and said, “my brother is standing right next to me right now.”
