Shayne Whittington takes assistant coaching job at alma mater
Whittington played at Western Michigan from 2009-14, and he now returns to become an assistant coach.
Shayne Whittington retired from playing a few years ago after his body was giving out on him. He had multiple injuries and needed surgery. That’s when he started to consider what was next.
He got into real estate, but wanted to remain in basketball.
So he spent this past year as an intern/basketball assistant for the Indiana Pacers. Considering his skill level and experience — playing for the Pacers from 2014-16 — he was an ideal player to push the Pacers in scrimmage settings.
Now he’ll be moving on to a new situation, but one that is very familiar. He has been hired as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Western Michigan. He'll be on Dwayne Stephens' men’s basketball staff.
Whittington, 33, played at WMU from 2009-2014 and then went undrafted. But he soon latched on with the Pacers.
Congrats to Shayne and his family.
