The WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces are finalizing a deal to hire Pacers assistant coach Tyler Marsh on Becky Hammon’s coaching staff, a league source told Fieldhouse Files.
Marsh is in his second season with the Pacers, one of three player development assistants. He will finish the NBA season before moving on, per source. The Pacers’ regular-season finale is on April 10 in Brooklyn.
Hammon, an assistant on Gregg Popovich’s Spurs coaching staff since 2014, was hired by the Aces in late December to take over the team. Last week, they announced the hiring of Natalie Nakase, most recently an assistant coach for the Agua Caliente Clippers — the G League affiliate of LA Clippers.
Originally from Alabama, Marsh came to the Pacers with former head coach Nate Bjorkgren from Toronto after two seasons (2018-20) as the assistant video coordinator and player development coach. He also has served as an assistant coach in the G League for four seasons.
During individual pregame warmups, over an hour before tipoff, Marsh works with players like Chris Duarte and former Pacers guards Caris LeVert and Brad Wanamaker.
Then during games, he has a MacBook Pro on his lap and is behind the bench seated between assistant Jannero Pargo and Zach Chu, manager of game strategy and analytics. Most of his work is done in practice and before games working one-on-one with players on their skill development.
Khristina Williams of Girls Talk Sports TV first reported that Marsh was expected to join the Aces.
Pacers assistant coach Jenny Boucek, who is very close with Hammon, was offered a coaching position on Hammon’s staff and declined, another league source said, confirming Marc Stein’s report.
Boucek played and coached in the WNBA, and it still means very much to her, but she elected to stay in the NBA and on staff with Rick Carlisle. He hired her in Dallas back in 2018.
