Westfield guard Trey Buchanan commits to University of Iowa

Westfield High School senior Trey Buchanan has committed to play for Fran McCaffery at the University of Iowa.
The 6-foot-0 guard, the oldest son of Indiana Pacers GM Chad Buchanan, announced his decision Monday night. He’s had a preferred walk-on offer from Iowa since before the season.
“I'll definitely play next year,” Buchanan told Fieldhouse Files recently. “Then, hopefully I can move into something where my dad is and what he's doing. And just stay in the sports world and basketball, especially because I love basketball. And I consider myself a good student, but honestly, I don't really have any other interests outside of basketball. I just wanna stay in the game.”
Buchanan was a multi-sport athlete, playing anything and everything growing up — first in Portland and then Charlotte. He played soccer until moving to Indiana in 2017 and then baseball until he entered high school four years ago.
His dad is from Des Moines, then played basketball and baseball at Div. III Simpson College.
As planned, Buchanan waited until after his high school season was over to finalize his decision. The Shamrocks lost in the sectional semifinals to Noblesville 71-43 earlier this month.
“I've had a lot of talks with my dad about just recruitment and the process that goes with it,” he said. “I just wanna enjoy my senior year. I kinda have to push it aside during the season and I've told most of my coaches or like the coaches recruiting me that I'm probably gonna wait till the end of the season before I commit anywhere. So, that kinda takes a little pressure off that.
“That lets me just enjoy the ride a little bit more versus having to worry about that.”
Buchanan’s game has evolved a great deal since he entered high school. He learned from Braden Smith, who’s now at Purdue, both in terms of shooting and what it takes to be a leader.
He’s added muscle, improved his shooting, court vision and was always looking to make the right play. And in his final season at Westfield, he helped them to a 19-3 record.
