Speakeasy, premium dining and an event space: Commission Row opens adjacent to Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Jan. 22

Herb Simon's latest project features high-end dining and a speakeasy named after his late brother, Mel. It's a new option for dinner before a game or drinks afterward.

There is a new option for a complete dining and drinks experience right next to Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

A three-level, 30,000 square-foot building called Commission Row officially opened at 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 22 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony held on the third floor with key figures. It is an investment of Pacers Sports & Entertainment owner Herb Simon, in collaboration with the incredibly successful Cunningham Restaurant Group.

This marks the completion of more than $400 million in construction over the past three-plus years: three phases of renovations to The Fieldhouse, the construction of Bicentennial Unity Plaza, and this brand new building that previously was street-level parking.

I had the opportunity to attend a sneak preview on Wednesday and was impressed with everything they had done — from the details, to the offerings and service. It is a premium experience in downtown Indianapolis.

This front desk is going to catch your eye — and probably become a favorite spot for photos.

Commission Row restaurant is on the main floor, headlined by steak and seafood. There’s a welcoming square bar in the middle.
- Sunday-Thursday: 11 a.m. - 10 p.m.; Friday-Saturday: 11 a.m. - 11 p.m.
Mel’s is a speakeasy downstairs. There’s a great photo opportunity upon entering with a couch and neon sign. There’s private spaces, great for date night or working on a business deal. And the bartenders down there emphasized how all of the cocktails on their menu are unique. They invested in technology to craft speciality drinks that will only add to the experience. You’re coming here for that more so than a typical vodka soda.
- Sunday-Thursday: 4 p.m. - 11 p.m.; Friday-Saturday: 4 p.m. - 12 a.m.
On the third level is Above, an event space for up to 250 people. There’s a balcony with seating, overlooking Bicentennial Unity Plaza — which currently features an ice skating rink. There’s also a huge fire outdoor fire pit that will get attention. Some of the hors d'oeuvres they brought out were really tasty. This will become a good option for weddings, banquets, celebrations.

This latest project of Simon’s was announced back on March 21, 2023 — and the project met its target date. The objective was to have it open and running in time for Indy’s NBA All-Star weekend that begins in just over three weeks, on Feb. 15.
